THELMA in the WINIR Conference on Private & Public Institutions for Good Governance - Sapienza Università di Roma, Rome

 

At this year's edition of the WINIR Conference on Private & Public Institutions for Good Governance, held on July 24 at Sapienza Università di Roma, Italy, we presented the paper "Reproductive Justice and Data Power: Rethinking Governance in the Age of Femtech."

Our presentation focused on the challenges surrounding Femtech governance and how these challenges affect users' experiences and the protection of their rights.

A central argument of the paper is the need to strengthen governance requirements within the Femtech ecosystem. This includes greater transparency, particularly regarding user consent and data-sharing practices, as well as stronger mechanisms for accountability, independent oversight, and effective remedies for harms.

In this regard, several policy directions deserve greater attention, including the development of gender-sensitive legal frameworks, public-interest oversight mechanisms, education and digital literacy initiatives, and international cooperation on digital rights.

Ultimately, this work is an invitation to continue a necessary debate. Advancing the protection of Femtech users' rights requires the active participation of all stakeholders involved in shaping, regulating, and delivering these technologies.
