THELMA in the I Congreso Internacional sobre Vulnerabilidad Social y Violencias Machistas: "Transitando la Incertidumbre. Miradas Teórico-Prácticas" - Universitat de les Illes Balears [Spanish below]

 

During Panel 2 of the I Congreso Internacional sobre Vulnerabilidad Social y Violencias Machistas: "Transitando la Incertidumbre. Miradas Teórico-Prácticas" organized by the Universitat de les Illes Balears - Palma/Mallorca, THELMA was presented as a good practice to overcome structural gender-based violence in the Femtech industry. Through the paper "Structural gender-based violence on women's bodies: Reproductive rights and technologies," we explain why the Femtech industry could be understood as a "Trojan horse" in the promotion of women's rights. This industry focused on women's health and well-being could result in women's rights violations, even if this is not the goal. The main reason is that the gender dynamics structurally embodied in our society transform this industry into a tool for women's rights violations when exposing them to additional risks, such as gender bias (Hammond & Moretti, 2023), reinforcement of stereotypes (Lupton, 2014), unwanted pregnancies (Tran, 2019), and the use of data without user consent for profit-making purposes (Alfawzan, 2022).

Durante el Panel 2 del I Congreso Internacional sobre Vulnerabilidad Social y Violencias Machistas: "Transitando la Incertidumbre. Miradas Teórico-Prácticas" organizado por la Universitat de les Illes Balears - Palma/Mallorca, se presentó THELMA como una buena práctica para superar la violencia estructural de género en la industria Femtech. A través de la ponencia "Violencia estructural de género en los cuerpos de las mujeres: Derechos reproductivos y tecnologías", explicamos por qué la industria Femtech podría entenderse como un "caballo de Troya" en la promoción de los derechos de las mujeres. Esta industria centrada en la salud y el bienestar de las mujeres podría dar lugar a violaciones de los derechos de las mujeres, aunque este no sea el objetivo. La razón principal es que las dinámicas de género estructuralmente encarnadas en nuestra sociedad transforman esta industria en una herramienta para la violación de los derechos de las mujeres al exponerlas a riesgos adicionales, como el sesgo de género (Hammond & Moretti, 2023), el refuerzo de estereotipos (Lupton, 2014), los embarazos no deseados (Tran, 2019) y el uso de datos sin el consentimiento del usuario con fines de lucro (Alfawzan, 2022).
